Understanding the Difference Between the Original Format and the 2022 Convention Cards

Understanding the Difference Between the Original Format and the 2022 Convention Cards

Both of these convention cards are approved by the ACBL for tournament play, but they serve slightly different preferences and purposes. Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide which is right for you:

Original Format Convention Cards (Form SS1B)

Popularity: A classic choice, widely favored by players for its familiarity.

Design: Retains the traditional layout bridge players have relied on for years, updated in 2023 to align with the latest ACBL rules.

Features:

  • Simple, straightforward design for easy use.
  • Ideal for players comfortable with the established format.
  • Printed single-sided, dedicated entirely to convention details.

Size: 8” x 8.5”

Quantity Discounts: Available for orders of 500 sheets or more.

Best For: Those who prefer a familiar and time-tested design with only minimal updates.

2022 Edition Convention Cards (Form SS1)

What’s New?: A complete redesign to reflect modern bridge strategies and updated Alert procedures.

Design Enhancements:

  • Vertically shaded columns for better organization (e.g., Overview, Minors, Majors, Notrump).
  • Sequential arrangement of opening bids, starting with lower-level bids.
  • Expanded sections for preempts, balanced openings, and defensive carding methods.
  • Additional space to clarify partnership agreements.
  • Color-coded Alert (red) and Announce (blue) procedures for improved clarity.

Printed Double-Sided: Conventions on one side, scoring space on the other.

Size: 8” x 8.5”

Best For: Players who want a more detailed, modern approach to organizing conventions and are ready to adapt to the updated card layout.

Choosing the Right Card

While the Original Format Convention Cards maintain the simplicity many players know and love, the 2022 Edition offers a more structured, detailed layout suited to partnerships with extensive agreements. Both are excellent options and fully approved by the ACBL. Whether you value familiarity or are eager to embrace the new design, you’ll find a card that meets your needs.
