Kay, a member of a pioneer family in Lake Charles, Louisiana, attended Louisiana State University, the University of Colorado, and McNeese State University, where she earned a B.S. degree. She married William D. Blake in 1954, and together they have three daughters and seven grandchildren. During her child-rearing years, Kay was a full-time mother and active community volunteer. In recent years, she developed an interest in computers, duplicate bridge, and writing. She and her husband purchased and remodeled a building for the Lake Charles Duplicate Bridge Club, now regarded as one of the finest bridge facilities in the United States. Her work on Record Run with Jim Barrow, documenting his year on the circuit, allowed her to blend her passions for writing, bridge, and technology.
